After more than 2+ years since my last interview for JackiesRamblings.com I am starting off 2016 with a bang and moving forward doing them again! 😀
High School classmate and Facebook friend Derrick Bates will be participating in his 2nd Amateur MMA SteelFist Fight “Conquer” on Saturday, January 9th 2016 5pm MST at the Legacy Events Center in Farmington, Utah.
I thought what a unique trade interest it is and he should be interviewed in his early Amateur MMA Fighter Career. 🙂
1. Tell me a little bit about you – name, where you live, family etc…?
Derrick William Bates. I live in Heber city Utah. Born and raised here in the valley. I have never really left:( My girlfriend is Kerrstin Mair and we’ve been together for 6 years now:) We have 2 kids. Our oldest is our son, his name is Porter and he just turned 5 and our daughter is 3 1/2 and her name is Kirra:) my kids are the best thing that has ever happened to me:)
2. When did you first get into becoming a Amateur MMA Fighter?
I’m super new to the sport! I’ve always loved the UFC and MMA fighting but up until this year I had never trained to fight or anything! I guess you could say I really just got a wild hair and contacted my buddy who had like 5 fights for Steelfist already. I told him I was curious what I would have to do to get started. To my surprise he messaged me back within like ten minutes and told me he had signed me up to fight! He told me you fight on this date and at this weight! I was like damn Beau that was fast lol:) it quickly turned from curiosity to actuality!
3. What is your favorite part of being an Amateur MMA Fighter?
My favorite part so far has been the recognition I’ve received. I’m still such a rookie but I’ve noticed a bit more respect and have been shocked about how many people have said something about it:) whether they watched it on FB or was there or just heard that I was fighting now, it’s been really cool.
Another good part is it definitely gives me something to work for and look forward to. Around April of this year (and for years and years before that date) I was a lazy 205 lbs:( maybe more at times. It took me a few months but around August is when I reached 175 lbs and took my first fight:) It was a great feeling of just losing the weight!
4. Why did you want to become an Amateur MMA Fighter?
I wanted to become a fighter to establish something for myself:) I’ve never done anything really that would come up in conversation if my name was brought up and I wanted that! I wanted people to think of a guy with courage and strength and dedication! I’ve been working hard to look my best in the cage when the door locks! Plus I wanted that rush! That mega adrenaline boost that we all love!
5. What advice would you give to others who want to become an Amateur MMA Fighter or those new to the industry?
My advice would be to just do it lol! It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog ya know? Don’t ever let the lack of experience or tools stop you from setting lofty goals and fighting like a damn cage fighter to achieve!
6. Where do you see yourself in the future?
I signed a 3 fight contract for the organization STEELFIST: so I have one down and 2 to go for now! There’s guys I know that fight for Steelfist that have a record of 3-0 and are fighting for a belt in their weight class so…. If I could get there and maybe get a shot at a belt! I would have to reevaluate at that point! I would love to get paid to fight no doubt!
7. What are your Hobbies?
I have a ton of hobbies lol! I’m always trying to do something different. I love to go hunting and fishing and anything outdoorsy! I love to go Metal Detecting. I’ve been doing that for a couple years now and have found some really cool stuff. I love grow vegetables in the spring and summer:) I spend a lot of time in my garden! I sketch a little. I’m a numismatist. Which is someone who collects coins! I love collecting coins! Mostly old silver coins. I used to play a ton of poker. Texas hold ’em was my one and only hobby for dayz and dayz! Once you have kids though the gambling is like the first to go!
