Today on Facebook Trending showed today is Wikipedias 15th Anniversary! So I thought since I utilize Wikipedia A LOT, I would dedicate a blog post to them 😀
I love Wikipedia, although some people question its accuracy I think they try to display the most authentic information they can because they are a free content internet encyclopedia, aside from them I also like to use online dictionary and thesaurus and occasionally the urban dictionary. Although my grammar sucks #FuckMyGrammar I at least what to use accurate words and unique words for my descriptions and understanding of the new slang in the world as part of my self-expression.
I mainly right now use wikipedia when I am blogging like I am doing now to get information on a certain subject that I am interested in learning more about or when I am watching a new TV show on Netflix and want to learn more about the characters, plots or episodes. For example blogging right now I am reading up on wikipedia history itself of course on the wikipedia website HA!
My second example I have is with watching my tv shows on Netflix. I am currently watching Nurse Jackie so I read the episodes on wikipedia before I watch them on Netflix. So yes, wikipedia is very useful and influential to me. I also make regular donations to the site when I can.
I dont recall when I first started using wikipedia, especially regularly but wikipedia according to wikipedia was founded by Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales on January 15, 2001 and it turns out there were MANY versions of the site before wikipedia became wikipedia such as Nupedia.
Here is Wikipedias description summary of itself:
“Wikipedia (Listeni/ˌwɪkɨˈpiːdiə/ or Listeni/ˌwɪkiˈpiːdiə/ WIK-i-PEE-dee-ə) is a free-access, free-content Internet encyclopedia, supported and hosted by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Those who can access the site can edit most of its articles. Wikipedia is ranked among the ten most popular websites, and constitutes the Internet’s largest and most popular general reference work.
Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger launched Wikipedia on January 15, 2001. Sanger coined its name, a portmanteau of wiki[notes 3] and encyclopedia. Initially only in English, Wikipedia quickly became multilingual as it developed similar versions in other languages, which differ in content and in editing practices. The English Wikipedia is now one of 291 Wikipedia editions and is the largest with 5,056,397 articles (having reached 5,000,000 articles in November 2015). There is a grand total, including all Wikipedias, of over 38 million articles in over 250 different languages. As of February 2014, it had 18 billion page views and nearly 500 million unique visitors each month.
A peer review of 42 science articles found in both Encyclopædia Britannica and Wikipedia was published in Nature in 2005, and found that Wikipedia’s level of accuracy approached Encyclopedia Britannica ’s. Criticisms of Wikipedia include claims that it exhibits systemic bias, presents a mixture of “truths, half truths, and some falsehoods”, and that in controversial topics it is subject to manipulation and spin.”
At least it remains objective on how accurate their site is and I will continue to use them. 🙂
